Abstract

1310098 Chromaluminisation; treating with Mg and Ca OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES 27 May 1971 [15 June 1970] 17544/71 Heading C7F In halide pack chromaluminisation, there is used a powder of Cr-Al alloy whereof the Cr, prior to alloying with the Al, has been mixed with an inert diluent and treated with an atmosphere containing vapour of Mg and/or Ca. The starting Cr powder may be electrolytic or magnesothermic Cr, and treatment with metal vapour may be performed as follows: (i) form a Cr powder/diluent mixture containing Mg (and/or Ca) powder or chips and heat; (2) form Cr/dilueut mixture and pass in metal vapour from external source; (3) as (2), but pass in metal vapour + inert and/or reducing gas (Ar and/or He, or H 2 ) or (4) as (2), but pass in metal vapour + halogen containing acid, e.g. HCl HBr, HI. The inert diluent used for the metal vapour treatment stage, e.g. MgO or Al 2 O 3 , may be carried through with the Cr powder to the Cr-Al alloy formation stage and pack chromaluminisation, or may be removed from the Cr with HNO 3 and replaced by another diluent. The article to be coated may be of an alloy based on one or more of Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, or W.
