Abstract

1309429 Tape applicator TAPELER CORP 23 July 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 19722/71 Divided out of 1309428 Heading B8F in the tape applicator described in Specification 1,309,428 the tape roll is mounted in a spring biased manner on the hub 57 and the roll periphery is contacted by a spring biased friction roller 68 mounted on arm 64. The arm 64 is rotatably mounted on a spindle secured to the support 20 and is biased to follow the roll periphery as the diameter decreases due to the unwinding of the tape. A stop 71 may be inserted in any of threaded holes 70 to prevent the following action when the roll becomes smaller than a selected diameter. Roller 68 is mounted on a spindle 65 which projects through an arcuate slot 66. The roller 68 and the core 58 of the tape roll when mounted on the hub 57 are spring biased in similar manner. Hub 57 is secured to support 20 (Fig. 7) and contains a cup 72. Spring 74, retained by pivot 73, urges the cup into frictional engagement with the hub 57 and a further spring 75 is affixed at one end to the base of the cup at 76. The other end of spring 75 projects radially outwards through a slot 78 behind one part of a mutilated flange 79. The core (58) (Fig. 5, not shown) of the roll bears two inwardly directed lugs co-operating bayonet fashion with the mutilated flange 79, one of said lugs engaging the radially projecting spring end to tension the spring when the roll is moved clockwise. On operation of the tape applicator the tape is drawn off the roll upon downward reciprocation of carriage 23 and the spring 77 is tensioned. Upon return of the carriage the spring 77 and the roller 68 tend to rotate the tape roll anticlockwise to take up the slack. Reference is made to Specification 1,309,430 wherein provision is made to remove a backing tape interliner from the adhesive tape. In an alternative machine wherein the applicator is adjustably mounted on a post the arm 64 is biased by a weight instead of a spring.
