Abstract
1309147 Laminates OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 15 May 1970 [15 May 1969] 23705/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C4] A frictional brake material in the form of a body having an exposed braking surface shaped frictionally to engage a complementarily shaped surface consists essentially of a plurality of glass fibres secured together within a rigid binder with said glass fibres having ends and/or convolutions intersecting said braking surface at an angle thereto. A brake lining may be made by preparing a strip of material consisting essentially of a plurality of glass fibres secured together with a rigid binder in which the fibres extend generally along the major axis thereof severing the strip into blocks having surfaces at an angle to said major axis, aligning said blocks with their said severed surfaces facing in a common direction and rigidly fixing the blocks in relation to each other, whereby said severed surfaces provide a braking surface having a substantial number of fibre ends intersecting therewith. The blocks may be fixed by bonding them together and to a common backing. The brake material may be in the form of a disc or a shoe. The glass fibres may be staple or bulky glass fibres generally randomly laid and extending generally along the major axis of the strip; alternatively, the glass fibres may have a corkscrew or spiral-shaped configuration. The glass fibres which may be of borosilicate glass, may be coated with a friction modifier, e.g. aluminium, zinc, tungsten salts or titanium. The binder may be a high melting point inorganic material or a non-glazing cross-linked resin.
