Abstract

1308571 Rigid closed cell polyisocyanurate foams NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION 19 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 20586/71 Heading C3C Rigid closed cell polyisocyanurate foams are made by reacting together an organic polyisocyanate, a blowing agent and a polyether polyol comprising a condensation product of a polyol with propylene oxide and having grafted polyacrylonitrile branched side chains thereon. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of a polymerization catalyst. Conventional additives such as dispersing agents, cell stabilizers, char stabilizers, surfactants, flame retardants, fillers and polymers, may also be included in the mix. Specified polyisocyanates are polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanate, diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and triphenylmethane triisocyanate. The preferred graft polymer is a glycerinepropylene oxide polymer which has polyacrylonitrile side chains grafted thereon. Typical blowing agents are fluorotrichloromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, monochlorotrifluoromethane and dichlorotetrafluoroethane. Suitable catalysts are 2,4,6 - tri(dimethylamine methyl) phenol, N-methyl morpholine, and sodium or potassium benzoate. The surfactant may be a siloxane-oxalkylene block copolymer, the char stabilizer potassium fluoroborate, the filler fibrous silica, and a filler-type polymer a terpolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride.
