Abstract

1308536 Pitch and tar KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 5 June 1972 [5 June 1969] 27265/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division C1] A material from which carbon and graphite fibres can be obtained is prepared either by introducing naphtha into steam at 1800‹ C, and distilling the resultant material under reduced pressure at temperatures up to 300‹ C. and removing the lower m.p. component; or by treating polycyclic hydrocarbons with AlCl 3 from room temp. up to 450‹ C. at a given rate of temp. increase, removing AlCl 3 by washing and distilling the remainder at temperatures up to 300‹ C. under reduced pressure. The material is said to have properties in the following ranges (i) a carbon content 91 to 96À5% by wt.; (ii) a mean molecular weight of at least 400, and (iii) a melt viscosity during forming in the range 0À4 to 2000 poise. The material is melt spun into filaments at a speed of 600 m./min. with a single stage stretch of at least 1000 times and the resulting filaments are carbonized and/or graphitized under tension (see Division C1).
