Abstract

1308216 Boring earth &c BYRON JACKSON INC 16 Sept 1970 [22 Oct 1969] 44135/70 Heading E1F Apparatus for horizontally racking drill pipes 5 comprises spaced posts 27-32, and vertically movable beams 39a-39g mounted on each post. In the double section installation shown the posts of section B are opposed by posts 21-26 and beams of section A. In a section the pipes are racked in horizontal rows, spacers 43 on the beams resting on the pipes, and the lower row being supported by beams 38 fixed to the posts. On each post the movable beams are connected to one another by bolts 42, the arrangement being that the beams 39a are raised by hydraulic cylinders 46 to free the upper row and further raising of the beams 39a entrains the beams 39b-39g in turn until all the rows are free. The beams 39b-39g have fingers 53 onto which conveyors move pipe from a freed row for pickup by a transfer device, the fingers being moved by individual pneumatic cylinders automatically into a vertical position as the beams are raised. All fingers in a section may be moved into the vertical position when the beams of the section are in the lower racking position if it is desired to operate the other section. In a modification each of the beams are moved by a separate hydraulic cylinder, the spacers are shaped to engage the next lower beam, and the spacers have pivoted lugs spring loaded to lie horizontally and formed to steady pipe of different sizes.
