Abstract

1307905 Anaesthetic evaporator SACCAB SpA 1 April 1970 [1 April 1969] 15481/70 Heading A5T An evaporator for volatile anaesthetics adapted to cause the surface area of evaporation to vary in inversely to the vapour pressure of the liquid, comprises two coaxial cylinders 2, 3 defining an annular space 6 between them which is sealed at its ends by rings 4, 5, and a base 9, having a domed portion 10 extending into the inner space 8 defined by the inner cylinder 3, the portion 10 having a layer 11 of porous material, e.g. gauze, sintered metal, affording a large surface area. Liquid anaesthetic is introduced through a funnel 16 such that it occupies a part of the space 6 to the line 18 and covers part of the domed base portion 10, flowing into the inner space 8 via a plurality of holes 7. Gas is caused to flow into an axial tube 14 from a deviating valve 13 at the top of the apparatus, which gas absorbs anaesthetic vapour from the surface 11 and flows out as shown, the portion 15, slidably mounted on the tube 14, serving to limit the volume of the evaporation chamber. As evaporation takes place, the liquid cools and cools the air and vapour mixture trapped in the outer space 6 causing a reduction in volume and pressure of the gas and a rise in the liquid to the point 19, a corresponding fall of the liquid in the inner space 8 results in a greater surface of evaporation being available.
