Abstract
1307811 Laminates BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 26 Feb 1970 [5 Feb 1969] 6078/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division F4] A method of making a heat insulated cabinet, e.g. a domestic refrigerator cabinet includes the steps of feeding in continuous form: (1) material to form the outer surface of the -sides and top of such cabinet, (2) a mixture of materials to form a core of foamed heat insulating material, and (3) material to form the inner surface of the sides and top of such cabinet so as to form a continuous strip in the form of a sandwich of the materials set forth in (1), (2) and (3) above, parting off predetermined lengths of the strip, and subsequently bending each parted length through a right angle at each of a pair of spaced parallel lines so as to form the top and each side of the cabinet. In a preferred embodiment, prepainted steel strip la to form the outer surface is.passed through a rolling mill to bend over the edges of the strip to form a flange 1b and an inwardly facing channel 1c and 1d and step 1e, the resultant trough-like structure being preheated by infra-red heaters 6 and coated by traversing nozzle 11 with a -mixture of a resin containing a plurality of hydroxyl groups, a polyisocyanate and a foaming agent to form a foamed resin core 7. An adhesive is then applied to the top surface of the stepped portion 1f of the steel strip and overlaid with a strip 13 of polystyrene prior to passing the assembly to slat conveyer 21 where it is maintained under pressure by platens 23 and 23a whilst being heated. The sandwich structure is then cut into lengths by saw 24 and the severed lengths each passed through spaced cutters to form triangular section grooves across the width of the strip along two spaced parallel lines as at 26 and to cut away the -end portions of the core 7 and the polystyrene strip 13 to expose -the edges 1g of the steel strip. In an alternative embodiment, the steel strip is replaced by an aluminium strip and the polystyrene strip 'by an acrylonitrilebutadiene - styrene copolymer or composite paper. The Specification also discloses a laminate for forming the bottom and back of the cabinet and comprising (in order) a polystyrene layer, a polyurethane foam core, a polyethylene layer, a composite paper layer and a layer of aluminium foil.
