Abstract

1307491 Drilling apparatus INSTITUT GORNOGO DELA SIBIRSKOGO OTDELENIA AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 20 Jan 1971 2735/ 71 Heading E1F A self-propelled tool for drilling holes in soil comprises a hollow body 1 having a pointed tip 2, and a hammer piston 6 reciprocable within the body by means of compressed air supplied continuously to chamber 9 and intermittently to chamber 7 defined by the body and the piston. A stepped sleeve 10 which extends into the chamber 9 includes a portion which co-acts with apertures 11 (only one being shown) in the piston to alternately communicate the chamber 7 with the compressed air supply and with atmosphere via passages 14 in a flexible coupling 12. In the condition shown the chamber 7 is open to atmosphere and supply of compressed air to the chamber 9 will cause the piston to perform an impact stroke and impact part 4 of the body. During the impact stroke the apertures 11 will move past the sleeve 10 to connect the chambers 7 and 9 so that the compressed air is supplied to the chamber 7. The piston will then be returned to the illustrated position and a further cycle will commence. The chamber 7 is connected via passages 8 to space 2a within the tip.
