1307198 Steering semi-trailers; road vehicle couplings D B RICKARDSON 21 Jan 1972 [6 Sept 1971] 2983/72 Headings B7H and B7T A steering device for a semi-trailer 2 having at least two pairs of wheels 3, 4, the axle of at least the rear pair of wheels 4 being steerable by a linkage mechanism 8, 9<SP>1</SP>, includes a steering plate 13 (Fig. 4) which is rotatably mounted on the trailer frame 15 by a ball-bearing ring 6, the steering plate 13 carrying a king pin 9 which engages the turntable 11 of a fifth wheel coupling mounted on the tractor vehicle 1, a wedge-shaped driver 10 which mates with a tapered slot 12 on the turntable 11 and an eccentrically mounted pin 7 which is connected to the linkage 8, 9<SP>1</SP>. Thus as the tractor 1 rotates relative to the trailer 2 during a turn, the plate 13 also rotates relative to the trailer 2 and operates the linkage 8, 9<SP>1</SP> to steer the rear wheels 4. In the case of a long trailer (not shown) the wheels 3 may also be steered. The eccentricity of the pin 7 may be adjustable to vary the steering geometry of the system. The device can be used with tractors 1 having a conventional fifth wheel coupling turntable 11 which is mounted for tilting movement about a horizontal axis 14.
