1307185 Continuous casting V N BOBKOVSKY T G GORBUNOVA A V EMYASHEV S N ZELENOV A A LUZENBERG V M ORLOV V K SVYATOSLAVOV G S OSINTSEV I V SMIRNOV and V S ARTEMIEV 22 April 1971 10661/41 Heading B3F [Also in Division C1] A water-cooled mould 1 contains a graphite sleeve 3 bearing a layer 4 of co-deposited pyrolytic graphite and at least one carbideforming element, e.g. from groups III-V of the periodic system. Elements such as B, Hf, Nb, Si, Ti, Ta, V or Zr may be used. The graphite lining 3 is ground into the mould 1 and may include a mandrel 5 having fins 7 (with spaces 8 between) by which it is supported. The mandrel bears a layer 6 similar to the layer 4. The layers 4, 6 are produced by passing through the lining 3 a gas-steam mixture containing methane and at least one carbide-forming element, e.g. Si in combined form in SiCl4. They are machined to give smooth surfaces. Cur or Sn-phosphor bronze may be cast.
