Abstract

1307139 Making caps; stamping CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 14 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 42838/71 Headings B3A and B3Q A woven cap 110, Fig. 6, is formed in a corrugated die 31 by a punch 30 and a central member 28 which has projecting ribs 37 aligned with the corrugation recesses 113 of the die. During cupping, deflections away from the die of the peripheral zone of a blank is more closely restricted by the ribs 37 than by the set-back surfaces 37 therebetween, thus promoting the growth of corrugations beneath the ribs. The crests of the latter may be level with, or slightly set back from, an outer margin 32 which co-operates with a die 46, Fig. 10 to sever the blank from sheet stock. The member 28 is mounted on a first action platen 41 and the punch 30 on a second action cam 42, the die 31 being cushioned on springs 44 calibrated to give substantially free draw conditions. Lighter gauge ferrous or non-ferrous metal of higher temper may be worked, and the dies may be inverted from the positions shown.
