Abstract

1307110 Filling containers with' liquid S F BROADHURST 11 Feb 1972 [30 Dec 1970] 61778/70 Heading B8C Apparatus 1 for filling containers 5 made from thermoplastics material comprises a pair of metering chambers 25, 27 to receive a supply of liquid, a respective metering piston 31 slidable within each. chamber; a liquid outlet 39 from each chamber communicating with a container filling head, drive means 43 for moving the pistons alternately in one direction and then the other; movement of one piston in one direction passing liquid into the respective chamber and movement of the piston in the other direction causing a predetermined volume of liquid to be discharged from the chamber through the outlet to the filling head, the drive means being arranged to advance each container 5 when it has been filled by a liquid discharge stroke of a piston 31. As shown, the metering chambers 25, 27 are integral with a liquid supply tank 21 from which the liquid is passed by each piston alternately to the filling head from which it emerges through a spout 15 into a container 5, formed from film 7 on a mandrel 3 in known manner.. Heat sealer bars 9 flatten and seal the tubular container 5 at spaced intervals and also advance the filled container prior to the next sealing operation. The drive means 43 comprises an inputshaft 45, an output shaft mounting a crank 47 for moving the sealer bars 9, and a cam-shaft mounting cams (57), (59), Fig. 2 (not shown), which, through followers (61) and linkage (63), (65), drive the pistons 31. Each chamber 25, 27 and outlet 39 is provided with a non-return valve 37 and 41, respectively.
