C. engine comprises a detachable cylinder head 1 which has in its end face opposing the combustion chamber or chambers a cast-plate insert 8 facing the or each chamber and of thermally conductive elastic ring 10 is disposed between the cylinder 6 and cylinder head. Grooves 11 in the ring are provided for cooling air. The cylinder and cylinder head are aligned by three point locating means (not shown).
