Abstract

1305408 Laminates BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 9 April 1970 [10 April 1969] 16839/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Surfaces are coated by applying a molten olefin polymer containing carboxyl groups, the olefin polymer being a terpolymer containing 60-90 parts by weight ethylene, 0À2-20 parts by weight ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 0À5-20 parts by weight of ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and the terpolymer being employed in conjunction with 0À005%-5% by weight based on the weight of the terpolymer of a compound of formula in which Y is S or -CH-CH 2 -CH.CH 3 -S-X where X is 8-14 C alkyl. A preferred terpolymer comprises 72-90 parts by weight ethylene, 2-8 parts by weight acrylic acid and 1-20 parts by weight t-butyl ester of acrylic acid. Metal layers may be bonded to polyolefin layers to produce laminates suitable for the manufacture of body parts of vehicles, in making facing, lining or other panels or walls for buildings, ships, aircraft and containers and for thermal and sound insulating purposes when the middle layer contains fillers such as mica or sound insulation or porous material for thermal insulation. Metals may be bonded to metals. Other applications mentioned are the bending and coating of textiles, fabrics, rubber, leather, paper and glass. In a typical example a compound of formula is coated on to granules of a terpolymer of 88 parts ethylene, 2À7 parts acrylic acid and 9À3 parts t-butyl ester of acrylic acid to provide 0À1% by weight of a compound of the weight of the terpolymer. The terpolymer is then extruded and blown to form a film. A sandwich is made by placing a sheet of flow density polyethylene between two aluminium sheets using pieces of the terpolymer film as interlayers one on each side of the polyethylene sheet and the assembly is then pressed at 180‹ C., 0À1 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>. In another example the terpolymer is extruded on to the outer surface of a hot iron tube which is rotated and advanced horizontally such that an overlapping spiral of the terpolymer is formed round the tube acting as a corrosion-resistant layer or as an adhesion promoter between the tube and a protective layer of low density polyethylene to be applied subsequently.
