Abstract

1304917 Roller conveyers ERMANCO Inc and GENERAL LOGISTICS CORP 4 May 1970 [5 May 1969] 21316/70 Heading B8A An arrangement on a roller conveyer for accumulating articles by braking a set of rollers 10 upstream of a point at which a conveyed article depresses a trigger roller 23, comprises a sprag 21 actuated by a link 25 connected to a lever of the trigger roller, to engage a key 20 on a sleeve 13 which is frictionally driven by a power shaft extending therethrough and which frictionally drives pulleys 16 thereon, the latter driving the rollers 10 through endless resilient belts 18. The power shaft continues to rotate during the sleeve braking operation. In the embodiment of Fig. 8 (not shown) the belt driving pulleys are formed by grooves in the sleeve. In the embodiment of Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) the sprag is formed integral with the trigger roller lever and engages a key on a part of the grooved sleeve which extends to the downstream end of the next succeeding downstream set of braking rollers. The sleeve is carried by a pivot shaft instead of the power shaft, the rollers being driven from a separate power shaft through friction pulleys and further belts. The sprag may be movable axially of the rollers to unbrake the same whilst the trigger roller is still depressed. In a further embodiment, Fig. 15 (not shown), each sprag is mounted on the frame of a trigger roller such that both the trigger roller at the downstream end of the set of rollers to be braked and the trigger roller at the downstream end of the next succeeding downstream set of rollers to be braked have to be depressed before any braking can occur. In all the above embodiments, the trigger rollers may be situated midway along braking sets of rollers and the arrangement may be applied to a gravity system where no power drive is provided.
