Abstract

1304571 Gyroscopes SPERRY RAND CORP 25 April 1970 20009/70 Heading G1C The rotor 20 of a gyroscope 10 is mounted on a drive shaft 15 by a flexural support 24 which permits tilting of the rotor about axes perpendicular to the spin axis 14 and a further flexural support 41 is provided axially to support the rotor 20 on the drive shaft 15, the flexural support 41 having a first flexural portion 42 which permits tilting of the rotor about axes perpendicular to the spin axis and which extends through the flexural support 24, and a second flexural portion 46 having a spring characteristic which is arranged substantially to compensate the spring effects of the flexural support 24 and the portion 42. As shown, the drive shaft 15 which is mounted in bearings 12, 13 and is arranged to be rotated by a synchronous motor 16, supports the rotor 20 by way of the flexural support 24 on a hub 23 at one end of the shaft 15. The flexural support 24 comprises three radially extending ligaments (25, 26, 27), Fig.2, (not shown), which are fixed at their inner ends to the hub 23 and at their outer ends to a web 22 of the rotor 20 which is provided with a heavy inertia rim 21. The flexural support 24 has a central aperture 36 through which passes the flexural portion 42 which is attached at one end 43 to the hub and at the other end to the web 22. The flexural portion 46 is also connected at one end to the web 22 and at the other end to an adjustable resilient diaphragm 47 or an adjustable spring biased member Fig.3, (not shown), the diaphragm 47 (or spring biased member) being manually adjusted to ensure that the effect of portion 46 compensates the joint effects of portion 42 and flexural support 24.
