Abstract

1304485 Battery charging systems INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970] 22947/71 Heading H2H A circuit arrangement for storing electrical power required to operate a member 8 such as a valve in a remote, submerged well-head comprises a main accumulator 3 charged indirectly from an electric generator 1 and a protective circuit which interrupts the charge current for the accumulator when fault conditions arise. The generator, which may be a fuel cell, is connected via a current regulator 19 adapted to detect a short circuit, an open circuit detector 20, a current measuring device 21 and switches 4a-4c to Nickel-Cadmium auxiliary accumulators 2a-2c, A programme device 27 controlled by a clock 25 closes the switches 4a-4c in sequence to enable the generator to charge the auxiliary accumulators which are discharged in sequence by the successive closing of switches 5a-5c under the control of the clock 25. The discharge currents flow through current regulator 22-24 and a current detector 28 to charge the main accumulator 3. When a transmitter-receiver 9 receives an ultrasonic command signal from a central station requesting operation of the member 8 an actuation device 17 receives a signal from the transmitter-receiver and causes closure of a switch 12 to open the valve at the well head or closure of a switch 14 to close the valve. If the device 21 detects that the charging current for the auxiliary accumulators is outside predetermined limits a signal is supplied on line 31 to a safety device 32 which causes the device 17 to close the switch 14 and maintain the valve closed. The device 32 also sends a signal on line 34 to the clock 25 which opens the switches 5a-5c and causes the device 27 to open the switches 4a-4c. If a low charging current is detected by the detector 28, a signal on line 36 causes the device 27 to open the switch 4a-4c associated with the faulty auxiliary accumulator and a new programme is initiated using only the remaining auxiliary accumulators. Failure of all the auxiliary accumulators causes the device 27 to supply a signal on line 39 to the safety device 32 which causes the device 17 to close the switch 14 thereby holding the valve closed. Detectors 41 monitoring pressures and temperatures at the well head also cause closure of the valve when these parameters exceed predetermined values.
