Abstract

1303623 Sonar systems CONTROL DATA CORP 15 Nov 1966 [15 Nov 1965] 51248/66 Heading H4D In an acoustic radiator system, a linear alloy of sonic transducers 10a, 10b ... 10n produce a sound beam which is caused to scan periodically by frequency control. Delay devices which consist of binary dividing circuits 12a, 12b, ... 12n are coupled to the transducers through flip-flops 14a, 14b ... 14n. These delay devices are controlled in correspondence with the source frequency so that, as the latter is altered, the delays at each transducer are changed and the radiation distribution from the system is angularly moved. A reference pulse frequency, which is preselected, fixes the carrier frequency of each transducer while a clock frequency determines the time delay between the pulses of one transducer and the next i.e. the phase relationship of their respective carrier wave outputs. When installed in a ship, correction in yaw, pitch and roll may be effected by adjustment of the source frequency so as to move the beam correctively. In an embodiment in which 180 degree scanning is effected (Fig. 5), two dividing circuits are associated with each transducer. To prevent the formation of back-lobes in the transducer radiation pattern, further delay factors are incorporated. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), a switching circuit is incorporated so as to enable scanning between 90 and 180 degrees merely by reversal of the phase relationship required to scan between 0 and 90 degrees. The outputs from the transducers are in the form of square waves; filtering may occur in the transducer itself; or separate filters may be provided between the transducers and flip-flops.
