Abstract

1303619 Siloxy-terminated polybutadiene; mixed resin compositions DOW CORNING CORP 20 May 1971 [29 June 1970] 15978/71 Headings C3P and C3T [Also in Division B2] Siloxy-terminated polybutadienes of the formula wherein: R is a C 1-18 monovalent hydrocarbon radical; X is a hydrolysable radical selected from Cl, C 1-6 alkoxy, C 1-8 acyloxy and ketoxime radicals; a is 1 or 2; and n is an integer such that the polybutadiene has an average M.W. of 500-3000; are prepared by reacting dihydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene with a silane of formula X b SiR 4-b in which b is 2 or 3 and X and R are as defined above. The reaction may take place in a solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene or THF. The products air-dry to give soft adhesive tacky coatings, e.g. for aluminium panels ; alternatively, the presence of an organic peroxide catalyst causes cross-linking and cyclization of pendant vinyl groups to give hard thermosetting coatings for metal and wood. Mixed resin compositions comprise (a) 5-45 wt. per cent of a siloxy-terminated polybutadiene as above, and (b) 55-95 wt. per cent of a hydroxyl-functional organosilicon resin consisting essentially of units of the formula wherein: R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-6 monovalent hydrocarbon radical, at least 70 mol. per cent of the R<SP>1</SP> radicals being methyl and phenyl, c has an average value of 1À0 to 1À7, and the organosilicon resin has a silicon-bonded hydroxyl content of 1-10 wt. per cent based on the weight of the resin. The two components couple together in the presence of a suitable solvent, e.g. toluene or xylene, either without or with a suitable catalyst, e.g. an amine or titanate. The mixed resins may be cured by the presence of either or both of (i) a silanol condensation catalyst, particularly ferric octoate, and (ii) an organic peroxide cyclizing agent, e.g., 2,5-dimethyl - 2,5 - bis - (t - butylperoxy)hexane. The compositions may contain other polysiloxanes, e.g. a phenylmethylpolysiloxane to provide coatings with release properties. Fillers, e.g. silica, and pigments, e.g. a mixture of titania and alumina, may also be present. Compositions containing 10-30% of (a) are suitable for coating metals, e.g. pipes, and examples relate to the coating of sheets of aluminium and steel.
