1302361 Gas-producing compositions MINISTER OF AVIATION 3 Aug 1961 [11 May 1960] 16702/60 Addition to 915910 Heading C1D A plastic gas-producing composition consists of an intimate mixture of constituents including a cyclic polymethylene-polynitramine explosive and a moderating solid organic substance bound together by a visco-elastic liquid binder which is a polymeric aliphatic hydrocarbon with side groups and having a viscosity in the range 250,000 to 7,000,000 poises at 25‹ C. Explosives specified are cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine and cyclotetramethylene - tetranitramine. Moderating agents are nitroguanidine, oxamide, melamine, 1 : 3 - dinitro - 1 : 3 - diazacyclopentane, and diphenylglycol uril. Suitable binders are polyisobutene and polypropene. Other ingredients may be inorganic oxidising agents, e.g. ammonium perchlorate, ammonium nitrate, and alkali metal perchlorates and nitrates, a solid combustible element, e.g. Al, Mg, Zr, Si, or B, and a surface active agent, e.g. lecithin or a mixture of pentaerythritol dioleate, ethyloleate, and sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate. The gasproducing composition may be made by coating the explosive and the oxidizing agent separately with the binder and mixing, with the addition of further binder if necessary. The product may be de-aerated and filled into a container by extrusion or pressing as described in the parent Specification. The compositions are suitable for use in rocket motors, fluid ejection systems, pressuring systems, and engine starter cartridges.
