Abstract

1302227 Propelling floating oil rigs OCEAN DRILLING & EXPLORATION CO 9 Dec 1970 [18 May 1970] 58541/70 Heading B7V [Also in Division E1] A floating oil drilling rig (see Division E1) has at conical ends 26 of submerged cylindrical hulls 16 steerable propulsion units. These may each comprise propeller 30 driven by a reversible D.C. electric motor 32 in the hull, and surrounded by an accelerating flow nozzle 33 mounted by axles 34, 35 to pivot with a tiller arm 38 controlled by jacks 39 fed with pressurized fluid from a pump 40 in the hull. The propulsion units may be used to propel the rig to its location and may be to "dynamically" anchor the rig, possibly using further units arranged to thrust normal to these units.
