Sept. 20, 1918, Furnace details.-A conical shield for an electrodie is in two or more parts resting at their upper ends against the electrode and at their lower ends on a base around the opening in the furnace roof through which the electrode passes. As shown, the base consists of a flanged water-cooled ring B. The segments are proportioned so as to allow for irregularities in the electrode, and may overlap each other; or the gaps between the edges may be closed by cover-plates D, each of which may be attached to one segment. The upper rim C<3> of each segment, which is flared to provide a smooth bearing surface, may also overhang the next segment as shown at C<2>. Alternatively, the shield may have, between the conical and flared parts, a cylindrical part in which are formed cooperating tongues and recesses of adjacent segments; the cover-plates are tongued correspondingly. In this case, the segments are provided with slotted lugs pivoting on pins secured to tho water-cooled ring. The slotted lugs are shaped so as to arrest the segments when these have been swung back to a convenient distance from the electrode, during replacement of the latter. The weight of the segments may be relied on to maintain close contact with the electrode, or there may be added a divided ring E, resting on lugs D<1> on the segments or cover-plates. The segments may be of metal lined with refractory material, or wholly of either of these materials.
