1301592 Can openers METAL BOX CO Ltd 24 June 1971 [24June 1970] 30610/70 Heading B8D In a can-opener of the type having rotatable cutter and traction wheels 10 and 15 mounted by spindles 20 and 21 in a housing 22, the cutterwheel being arranged to cut through the scanning wall 11 of double-scanned can end and the traction wheel having a frusto-conical chuckwall engaging surface 16 and a seam top-engaging surface 17, the cutter wheel spindle is mounted at an acute angle E to the traction wheel spindle, the angle E being such that rotational axis of the cutter wheel is parallel to the chuck-wall-engaging surface in a plane 30 containing the point of contact between that surface and the can seam. Abutments 29 and 24 on the housing locate the opener on the can, the abutment 24 tilting the housing about the spindle 21, Fig. 1 (not shown). If a handle 37 is not provided, another can-locating abutment pin 38 may be provided, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively, the can opener may be of the wall-mounted or vase-mounted kind. Handle 23 for rotating the traction wheel incorporates means not shown, for moving the spindle 21 axially to facilitate entry of the can seam. A buttress surface 35, which is provided either on the cutter wheel, a member coaxial with the wheel, or fixed with respect to the housing, constrains penetration of the cutting wheel to the outer layer of the can end seam.
