Abstract

Ammonia is produced synthetically by heating a gas mixture containing hydrogen and nitrogen to flame temperature under an elevated pressure, for example 50 atmospheres. by partial combustion with air, oxygenated ' air, or oxygen in a pressure flame burning under such conditions that no free oxygen is present after combustion, the heating being followed by rapid cooling of the flame gases for the retention of the ammonia formed. The flame temperature must be at least 1500‹ C. The residual gases after the removal of the ammonia may be re-injected into the pressure flame. The process may be carried out in apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, in which the mixture containing hydrogen and nitrogen, and the oxygen &c., are introduced, under pressure, through inlets J, L and burnt in a combustion chamber M, the flame gases being rapidly cooled and the ammonia absorbed by direct contact with water or acid contained in the vessel N and circulated by a pump P through' a cooling- coil Q. In a modified form of apparatus, the gases from the combustion chamber are passed through a cooling-coil surrounded by running water, and are then led away to an absorber.
