Abstract

1300393 Resin-fibre composites DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 28 Aug 1970 [30 Aug 1969 2 Dec 1969 16 Jan 1970] 43294/69 58753/69 and 2144/70 Heading D1R [Also in Division Cl] A resin-fibre composite comprises fibres which have been carbonised under tension and have then had pyrolytic carbon adhered to their surfaces. Tows, webs or fabrics or acrylonitrile are carbonised under tension then heated to say 1300‹C by radio-frequency, microwave or electrical resistance methods in an atmosphere containing pyrolysable vapour such as benzene, petroleum ether, acetone, acetic acid or other specified carbonaceous material. The material may be vapourised by drawing air or other gas through it, by applying reduced pressure, or by heating. Epoxy, aldehyde or polyphenylene resin, with endocis-bicyclo (2.2.1)-5-heptene-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid anhydride or di/para-aminophenyl) methane as cross-linking agent and benzyl dimethylamine or boron trifluoride/ethylamine as catalyst was added to the fibres in a leaky mould. The contents were squeezed by a plunger. The resin was gelled at 90‹ for 1 hour, excess resin was removed by the plunger and the composite cured for 2 hours at 120‹C, for 2 hours at 160‹C, then for 24 hours at 150‹C. Alternatively gelling for 5 minutes at 100‹C was followed by curing for 80 minutes at 170‹C. The composite contained 20-75% by volume of stress-carbonised fibres.
