Abstract

1299532 Polymerizing olefins MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 18 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 12993/70 Heading C3P Ethylene, optionally together with one or more other α-olefins or diolefins, is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a titanium compound (NR 4 ) p Ti m X (n.m+p) where R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group, or two thereof forming with the nitrogen atom a heterocyclic ring, the X substituents are halogen or optionally some thereof are OR<SP>1</SP> where R<SP>1</SP> is an organic group, m and p are 1, 2 or 3 and n is the valence of the titanium, contacted with (2) an activated anhydrous magnesium or zinc halide and reacted with (3) a hydride or organo compound of a metal of Groups I, II and III. The activated metal halide may be produced by grinding, optionally together with the titanium component, by decomposition of a compound RMgX, where R is hydrocarbon and X is halogen, or reaction thereof with a halogen compound such as a gaseous hydrogen halide, or by evaporating the solvent from an organic solvent solution under reduced pressure at above 100‹ C. Many suitable catalyst components are listed and examples describe the polymerization of ethylene in heptane in the presence of hydrogen and catalysts formed from magnesium chloride, triisobutyl aluminium and (1-9) N(CH 3 ) 4 Ti 2 Cl 9 , (2) (NH 4 ) 2 TiCl 6 , (3) (C 5 H 5 NH) 3 TiCl 6 and (7 and 10) from magnesium bromide, triisobutyl aluminium and (4) N(CH 3 ) 4 Ti 2 Cl 9 and (5) N(C 2 H 5 ) 4 Ti 2 Br 9 ; from magnesium bromide, diethyl aluminium chloride and (6) N(CH 3 ) 4 Ti 2 Cl 9 ; and from magnesium iodide, triisobutyl aluminium and (8) N(CH 3 ) 4 Ti 2 Cl 9 .
