Abstract

1299497 Aromatic amine-modified aldehyde condensation polymers WEYERHAEUSER CO 29 April 1970 [5 May 1969] 20630/70 Heading C3R An amine-modified condensation polymer is obtained by reaction of an aldehyde condensation polymer having reactive alkylol groups with an aromatic amine of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each an alkoxy, amino, hydroxyl, nitro, carboxyl or C 1-4 alkyl radical or hydrogen, and X is -(CY 1 Y 2 ) z -, -SO 2 -, -NH-, -O-, -S-, -CH=CH- or -S-S-, where Y 1 and Y 2 are each H or a C 1-3 alkyl radical and z is 0, 1 or 2. Quick-curing adhesive compositions are prepared by mixing the new resins with an aldehyde or precursor thereof, and optionally with fillers, pigments and plasticizers conventional in such compositions. Suitable aldehyde condensation polymers are those of formaldehyde with urea, urea/ melamine, melamine, phenol, phenol/resorcinol, resorcinol, and acetone. In the Examples 1-6 a "high ortho" phenol-formaldehyde resin is prepared, and reacted with a bis-arylamine then with a 55% solution of formaldehyde in methanol/water, alone or thickened with chrysotile asbestos. The bis-arylamines used are 3 : 3<SP>1</SP>- dimethoxybenzidine, 3 : 3<SP>1</SP> - diaminobenzidine, o - tolidine, 4 : 4<SP>1</SP> - oxydianiline and 4 : 4<SP>1</SP> - diaminodiphenyl - methane, -amine, -ethylene, -sulphone, or -disulphide. In Examples 7-9 a commercial urea-melamineformaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin is reacted with oxydianiline or methylene dianiline in dimethylformamide, then mixed with concentrated HCl and the 55% formol/asbestos mixture. Uses.-Adhesives for wood, metal, fabrics &c.
