Abstract

1299436 Vehicle suspensions; undercarriages T WALSHAW 26 Feb 1970 [19 March 1969] 14484/69 Headings B7D and B7L A vehicle has a wheeled chassis connected to a load-carrying body by a universal joint whose point of action is substantially at the same height as the centre of gravity of the loadcarrying body, the universal joint being constrained to allow angular movement and only substantially vertical linear movement between the body and chassis by virtue of coupling between adjacent wheels on the chassis. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), transversely extending pivot 14is common to two longitudinal beams 10, 12 carrying the vehicle wheels. Coil springs 28 are disposed between the beams and the body 24. The latter has secured thereto a ball 18 rotatable on a spindle 20 which bridges an aperture in, and is secured to, the body. The ball 18 is located in a mounting upstanding from the member which carries the pivots for beams 10, 12. Slots 26 receive the spindle. During cornering transverse forces acting between the body and chassis are taken through the ball joint so that lateral canting or movement is prevented. Similarly squat and dive are prevented. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), a longitudinal chassis member 100 supports fore and aft frames 102 to which independent wheel-supports arms 108 are pivoted. The arms 108 are also pivoted to longitudinal beams 110, 112 which have a common transverse pivot axis 114. The mounting 116 of the beams comprises a stirrup member 120 located against fore and aft movements relative to chassis member 100. A ball 118 extends from chassis member 100 through stirrup member 120 and into socket 138 in the vehicle body at the centre of gravity of the latter. The connection of the socket 138 to the vehicle body includes leaf springs 140. As opposed to a motor road-vehicle, the vehicle could be a rail vehicle; also the ball joint could be replaced by a linkage whose function simulates that of the ball joint.
