1299246 Imidazoles KONINKLIJKE PHARMACEUTISCHE FABRIEKEN NV 22 June 1971 [22 June 1970 30 April 1971] 30246/70 and 12546/71 Heading C2C Novel imidazoles of the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl group, R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are each a hydrogen atom or a C 1-12 alkyl group, X is a direct bond or a -(CH 2 ) 2 -, -(CH 2 ) 3 -, -CH=CH- or -CH=C(Hal)- group, in which Hal is a chlorine or bromine atom, and acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts thereof are prepared (a) by reacting compounds of formulae wherein Z is a hydrogen, alkali metal or silver atom and Y is the acid residue of a reactive ester or (b) when X is a -CH = CH-group, by reducing the corresponding compound wherein X is a -CH = C(Hal)- group; followed optionally by salifying the product. 5,10-Dichloro-5H-dibenzo-[a,d] cycloheptene is prepared by reaction of 5H-dibenzo [a,d]cyclohepten-5-one with phosphorus pentachloride. Fungicidal compositions for pharmaceutical and agricultural use comprise, as active ingredient, an imidazole of the first general formula above or an acid addition or quaternary ammonium salt thereof, in association with a suitable carrier or diluent.
