Abstract

1299035 Thermo-magnetic recording media NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 24506/71 Heading G2H [Also in Divisions B6, B8 and H1] A capsule (5 to about 1000 Á average diam.) comprises a light transmitting polymer wall enclosing magnetic particles and a vehicle which is a solid or paste at 18-50‹C. but a liquid at temperatures above 50‹ C., so as to allow movement of the magnetic particles in response to a magnetic field and subsequent fixing of the particles thus moved. The vehicle may be a substance solid at room temperature but pasty or liquid on heating e.g. a wax. Many vehicles are specified. The capsules may also contain lightreflecting particles and/ or pigment particles (many specified). In one embodiment, the magnetic particles are themselves encapsulated with dye or pigment in a polymer matrix. Thermo-magnetic recording media are made by incorporating the capsules in or on (with or without a binder) a substrate of e.g. paper, glass or plastics. The wet image produced by application of heat and magnetic field is optionally permanent set thermally erasable. In Example 15 a core composition of barium ferrite, tristeam wax and sorbitan trioleate is encapsulated in gelatine-gum arabic and ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer. The capsules are coated on to paper and polyethylene terephthalate substrates, dried and coated with polymethyl methacrylate. For further Examples, the materials encapsulated are stainless steel flakes, nickel flakes or a mixture of black magnetic iron oxide and titanium dioxide.
