Abstract

1299014 Foamed glass F W A KURZ 5 March 1970 10677/70 Heading C1M Inorganic foamed glass is produced by blending together one or more mineral powders which are amorphous or capable of being rendered amorphous by heating below 600‹ C. having at least 50% by weight SiO 2 and a specific surface area of at least 3000 cm.<SP>2</SP>/g. with one or more gas forming agents and one or more alkali metal containing substances and expanded at a temperature of 750‹ to 950‹ C. A crystalline powder may be mixed with the amorphous powder prior to expansion. The alkali containing material may be sodium or potassium water glass, solid alkali silicate, alkali hydroxide or an alkali carbonate. The gas forming agents may be carbon or sulphur containing and/or hydrogen evolving substances. The expansion process may be one stage in which case any water present in the starting materials assists the expansion, or a two-stage process in which the major portion of the water is removed by heating the starting materials at 200-350‹ C., the resulting mass being cooled and pulverized prior to the expansion stage.
