Abstract

1298632 Cutting rolls of material FELDMUHLE ANALGEN-UND PRODUKTIONS GmbH 12 Jan 1970 [11 Jan 1969(2)] 1437/70 Heading B4B Apparatus for cutting a web of material as it is fed from a roll 2 comprises a blade head 1 including a rotatable blade 9 on a shaft 8, the blade head being pivoted to an arm 15 at 14 and the axis of the shaft making an acute angle α with the axis of the roll. The angle α is preferably 1À5 to 8 degrees. The arm is movable sideways to adjust the width of the web cut by a motor 19 which drives a threaded spindle (not shown) and is supported by spring suspension means 16. A sensor 4, which may be a roller, rests on part 2a of the roll from which the cut web 3 is fed, the relative positions of the sensor 4 and the blade 9 being adjustable by a screw to control the depth of cutting. The pressure of the blade on the roll 2a may be increased by a double-acting pneumatic or hydraulic piston, (22) Fig. 3 (not shown), acting on a lever (21). Modifications (not shown) include the provision of fins on the blade or blade hub to direct cooling air to the blade edge. The sensor 4 may be replaced by a photoelectric sensor for pressure sensitive webs, the depth of penetration being regulated by means of a reflection light barrier. Further springs may be provided for applying and removing loads and the weight of the cutting head may be adjusted by a movable weight on a lever. The blade preferably cuts through one layer of the web at a time and its peripheral speed is 0À5 to 1À2 times the speed of the web. A plurality of cutters could operate on a roll simultaneously. The cutting blade may be of the kind having the shape of a convex sided square (not shown).
