Abstract

1298473 Implantable electrodes MEDTRONIC Inc 17 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968 31 Dec 1968] 56173/69 Heading A5R [Also in Division H1] An implantable electrode assembly comprises one or more leads 13 connecting a terminal 18, Fig. 3, with a terminal 20, said lead comprising an electrically non-conductive, flexible core 15, Fig. 2, having wound thereon one or more electrically conductive strands 10 in a helical configuration, each strand itself comprising an electrically non-conductive, flexible core (11), Fig. 1 (not shown) having wound thereon a strip of electrically conductive material (12) also in a helical configuration, lead or leads 13 being formed of or encapsulated in a material 16 substantially inert to body fluids and tissue. The cores 15 and (11) are preferably formed of a fibrous material and each of the helical windings referred to above is preferably spaced from adjacent windings, the said strip being preferably a thin, flat strip of metal of platinum or platinum-indium alloy. The connection 17 and terminal 18 may alternatively be further parts of the lead 13 and partially encased in the substance 16. The terminal 18 is adapted for connection to a portion of the body and terminal 20 for connection to a source of electrical signals.
