Abstract
1298159 Phosphorous pentafluoride USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 10 March 1970 11526/70 Heading C1A Phosphorous pentafluoride is produced by the reaction of phosphoryl fluoride with hydrogen fluoride. The PFs is vaporized and condensed and hexafluorophosphoric acid, formed by the reaction of water, phosphoryl fluoride and hydrogen fluoride is further treated by warming with a dehydrating agent to liberate a further quantity of phosphorous pentafluoride. The initial reaction of HF and POF 3 is preferably carried out by mixing the reagents in the cold, warming to room temperature, and heating in the range 60-80‹ C., or by pumping POF 3 into a reactor containing HF and carrying out the reaction in the range 10-100‹ C. It is preferred to use 2-4 moles of HF per mole of POF 3 . The removal of water from hexafluorophosphoric acid may be achieved by heating under pressure with SO 3 , pyrosulphuric acid or fluorosulphuric acid, preferably by cooling to - 196‹ C. before mixing and heating.
