Abstract

1297036 Igniters for solid propellent rockets FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 19 March 1970 [20 March 1969] 13416/70 Heading F3A An igniter 2, Fig. 7, for igniting a hollow solid propellent motor of a rocket comprises a casing 2 having an orifice for discharging flames towards the interior of the propellant, a priming charge 9, and a plate, 11 in which sticks 12 of a powder firing charge are embedded. The priming charge is electrically fired. In another embodiment of the igniter 2a, Fig. 4, the sticks 28 of firing powder are embedded at one end in a supporting plate 29 and are ignited by the flash from an electrical primer 26 passing through openings 31 in the plate 29. The igniter is secured to the rocket 1a by a threaded connection 19. The propellant A has a sevenpointed, star-shaped passage extending therethrough. In another embodiment of the igniter (Fig. 6, not shown), the embedded sticks of firing powder (32) extend through the plate (33) and are supported by the plate intermediate their ends. The supporting plate is formed of a combustible material, e.g. nitrocellulose, or a less combustible material such as polyester. The sticks of firing powder comprise tubes of circular or hexagonal cross-section. The circular tubes are such that the ratio of their length of projection from the supporting plate to their internal diameter is less than 25. The tubes are made of a double - based nitrocellulose / nitroglycerine powder.
