Abstract

1296094 Cutting and fine polishing glass tubing KAHLE ENG CO 23 Feb 1970 [24 Feb 1969] 8485/70 Heading C1M An apparatus for cutting and fine polishing lengths of glass tubing comprises a rotary turret 6, 7 having a plurality of glass tube holding chucks 8 mounted on the periphery for holding and moving vertical tubing stock 10 past a plurality of work stations I to X, means 31, 32 at one station, III, to cut a length of tubing 28 from the stock 10, means 29 to fine polish simultaneously the cut end of the tubing 28 and the end of the stock 10 at another station, IV and V, and means to remove the cut and polished tubing from the apparatus. Turret member 6 carries clamps 8 which are rotated by gears 11 engaging a ring gear 4 moving with turret member 6, and which are opened periodically by lever 8<SP>1</SP> to lower the tubing stock 10 a predetermined distance, lever 8<SP>1</SP> being raised as required by a cam (not shown). Lower turret member 7 carries a rod 16 and holder 15 assembly for each chuck 8 each movable separately vertically, the rod 16 having a rounded lower end 17 engaging a cam 18 and holder 15 having an end member 38 engaged by one arm of a crank 19, pivoted at. 23 below turret member 7, the other arm of which has a roller 24 engaging a cam 25. During the cutting and fine-polishing, holder 15, which supports the cut tubing 28, is rotated by means of a pulley 26 which engages the inner run of a belt 21 mounted on pulleys 22. The sequence is shown in Fig. 2 in which, at I, the lowered tubing stock 10 is supported on rod 16, with holder 15 in lowered position, the height of the cam 18, and therefore the rod 16, determining the length of tubing to be cut. At II, rod 16 is lowered slightly; at III, with holder 15 raised to engage the tube end, the length required is cut off as by a flame 31 and crack off member 32; at IV and V, the cut tubing 28 having slid down holder 15 to engage rod 16, the lower end of stock 10 and top end of tubing 28 are simultaneously fine-polished by a dual nozzle flame polisher 29. At VI, the cut tubing 28 is ejected by lowering of holder 15 to a discharge means. At stations VII, VIII and IX, holder 15 and rod 16 are raised to enable rod 16 to, engage the tubing stock 10 and both are lowered at X with lever 8<SP>1</SP> being operated to lower the tubing stock 10.
