Abstract

1295900 Crimped filaments made from acrylonitrile polymers CTA COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE DE TEXTILES ARTIFICIELS & SYNTHETIQUES 23 Dec 1970 [23 Jan 1970] 61091/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A process for the production of curled yarns including crimped filaments from a solution of a polymer or copolymer containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile units comprises (i) wet spinning a solution of the polymer or copolymer dissolved in an organic solvent therefor into a coagulating bath containing water, an organic solvent for the polymer and calcium chloride, (ii) washing and drawing the resulting filaments, (iii) treating the washed and drawn filaments in continuous form or in the form of cut fibres before drying and without tension in an aqueous bath containing calcium chloride at 110‹ to 120‹ C., (iv) washing the resulting material without tension to eliminate residual calcium chloride and (v) drying without tension. The polymeric acrylonitrile material may be in the form of one or more copolymers, mixtures of polymers or graft polymers containing also units of one or more ethylenic monomers copolymerizable with aerylonitrile, e.g. vinyl compounds, vinylidene chloride, acrylic or methacrylic acids, esters and amides thereof, methacrylonitrile, unsaturated compounds with carboxylic acid function or with sulphonic acid function, basic vinyl derivatives and vinyl dialkylamine ethers. The preferred organic solvent is dimethyl formamide, or dimethylsulphonide and bimethyl acetamide may be used. The preferred proportions of the constituents of the coagulation bath in the order water/solvent/ anhydrous calcium chloride are 10/60/30 to 60/30/w by weight. The preferred amount of anhydrous calcium chloride present in the coagulation bath is 10 to 30% by weight based on the coagulation bath. Preferably, the temperature of the coagulation bath is 0‹ to 20‹ C. The initial drawing may be effected in the aqueous medium of the coagulating bath or in air at ambient temperature, whereas the non- drawing at a higher rate is generally effected after washing the yarn at above 90‹ C. in water or water vapour. Preferably, the treatment bath contains 340 to 450 g./l. of CaCl 2 .
