Abstract

1295730 Rolling mills J FROHLING [trading as JOSEF FROHLING] 4 Dec 1970 [12 Dec 1969] 57735/70 Heading B3M A roll stand incorporates a screwdown which can be operated either mechanically or hydraulically to provide coarse or fine adjustment of an upper roll 1. The screwdown includes a nut 6 and a co-operating spindle 5, the spindle being rotatable by a worm wheel 9 and worm 8 to effect coarse adjustment. During such adjustment, which takes place before rolling starts, the nut 6 is held against rotation. For fine adjustment, which takes place during rolling, the spindle 5 is held against rotation and the nut 6 is turned. A hydraulically operated toothed rack 10, Fig. 2, meshes with the nut for this purpose. In order to reduce the load between the spindle and nut during fine adjustment, a rod 15 may be provided inside the spindle. The rod is loaded hydraulically to accept from 50 to 70% of the maximum rolling load. Alternatively, the whole rolling load may be taken by the rod, in which case the screwdown assembly is made inoperative, and the stand operates with a constant rolling pressure.
