Abstract

1295667 Inverting PLESSEY CO Ltd 9 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 32497/69 Heading H2F A polyphase inverter comprises a plurality of controlled switching means A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 operable sequentially so as to connect a plurality of windings PR, PB, PY to a D.C. supply such that, according to the states of the switching means, each winding has a first or second portion of the voltage of the D.C. supply or none of said voltage applied across it and including a shift register for activating the switching means in the appropriate order so as to produce stepped sine waves across the windings. A pair of such polyphase inverters each producing a stepped sine wave may be connected together and provided with means for varying their relative phase so as to control the output voltage of the combination. Fig. 6 shows the combination of a pair of three-phase inverters each using a bridge of six transistors or thyristors (represented by switches A1...C2; Aa1... Ca2), the first-bridge feeding primary windings PR, PB, PY of an output transformer whilst the second bridge feeds primary windings PaR, PaB, PaY. The main converting elements of the first inverter are controlled in specified order by means of bi-stable circuits (Fig. 4, not shown) driven by a twelve-stage shift register 54 (Fig. 5), a further shift register 54a drives bi-stable circuits controlling the main converting elements of the second inverter. The shift registers 54, 54a are driven by pulses on line 56 after reduction in frequency by counters 66, 68. The combined output voltage is adjustable by delaying the phase of the second inverter by means of a device 72 controlled by a voltage 54 which determines the reset time of details 68 and 54a.
