Abstract

1294642 Fabric softening composition COLGATE PALMOLIVE CO I May 1970 [29 May 1969] 21083/70 Heading D1P A fabric softening composition which may be used during the wash cycle of a machine washing process comprises an amine oxide having the formula where R 1 is alkyl radical having at least 18 C atoms, a monounsaturated aliphatic radical having at least 19 C atoms or a di-unsaturated aliphatic radical having at least 20 C atoms, and R 2 and R 3 are independently alkyl radicals or substituted alkyl radicals with 1-4 C atoms, and an alkali metal salt of a lower alkyl substituted benzene sulphonic acid, an alkali metal salt of a lower alkyl substituted toluene sulphonic acid, an alkali metal salt of a lower alkyl substituted xylene sulphonic acid or a mixture of such salts, where lower alkyl refers to a group containing 1-7 C atoms. It is preferable that the composition contains 5-20% by weight of the amine oxide and 10-20% by weight of the alkali metal aromatic sulphonate. The composition can also include 2-20% by weight of an alkali metal alkyl methyl naphthalene sulphonate in which the alkyl gp. contains 1-10 C atoms which lowers the cloud point of the composition and aids the recovery of the composition from freezing. The composition may also include colouring agents, aparifiers, perfumes and water; the amount of water used depends on the desired viscosity for the resultant composition.
