Abstract

1294570 Portioning tobacco MARTIN BRINKMAN AG 17 Nov 1970 [6 Dec 1969] 54675/70 Heading A2C In an apparatus for dividing portions 10 of equal weight from a strand of tobacco in a dividing passage 13, the tobacco is radially densified in a feed passage 12 as it is being fed therethrough to the dividing passage 13. The feed passage 12 comprises three solid casings 12' 1 - 12' 3 each provided with a tubular resilient sleeve 12" 1 - 12" 3 to form three resilient zones 12 1 - 12 3 . A pair of plate-type knives 30 are mounted towards the lower end of the dividing passage 13, and mounted beneath these are two sets of pivotable fingers 26 for retaining tobacco when in their closed position. The sets of fingers 26 are pivotally mounted to the lower plate 27 2 of a carriage 27, the plate 27 2 being joined by connecting rods 27 3 to an upper plate 27 1 which is suspended by measuring springs 23 from stressing devices 28 and which, as the carriage 27 descends with the continuous tobacco feed, engages auxiliary measuring springs 25 as it nears the end of its downward travel. In use, a tobacco is fed into the feed passage 12, the resilient sleeves 12" 1 - 12" 3 are subjected to suction and to atmospheric pressure alternately so as to progressively radially densify the tobacco passing through them. The downward feed of tobacco in the passage 13 is maintained by compressed air applied to an annular chamber 22. When the carriage 27 has descended a preset distance it is locked in position, the knives 30 actuated, the fingers 26 pivoted downwards to their open position, and the cut off portion 10 of tobacco is expelled onto a conveyer 50 by compressed air applied through an annular passage 49. The fingers 26 are then returned to their closed position and the rapid return of the carriage 27 upwards is effected by supplementing the action of the springs 23, 25 by the temporary actuation of the stressing devices 28. Electric contact switches together with pneumatic devices are used in the automatic operation of the apparatus.
