Abstract
1294432 Purification of carboxylic acids MONSANTO CO 22 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 10713/71 Heading C2C Carboxylic acids containing a halogen or halogen-containing contaminant are purified by passing the contaminated stream into a first distillation zone intermediate the ends thereof, removing a product stream from an upper part of the first distillation zone and introducing it into a second distillation zone intermediate the ends thereof and removing the purified acid from the lower part of the second distillation zone. The contaminant which may be an alkyl halide, hydrogen halide or elemental halogen, may arise from the process for the production of the carboxylic acid by reacting an alcohol with carbon monoxide in the presence of, as catalyst, a Group VIII metal and a halogen. In the example, the acid is acetic acid.
