Abstract

1294154 Crosslinking olefin polymers SIEMENS AG 5 Oct 1970 [16 Oct 1969] 47285/70 Heading C3P Olefin polymers are crosslinked by heating in the presence of at least one tertiary peroxide and 0À1 to 20 weight per cent, based on the polymer, of at least one radical transfer agent selected from acridine and acenaphthylene and halogen and aryl derivatives thereof. The radical transfer agent reacts with alkyl radicals formed during the crosslinking to form a resonance stabilized radical intermediate which is then saturated by hydrogen split off from the polymer. Specified peroxides are dicumyl peroxide, di - t - butyl peroxide, 2,5 - bis - t - butylperoxy - 2,5 - dimethylhexane, 1,3 - bis - (tbutylperoxy) isopropyl benzene, n-butyl-4,4- bis-(t-butylperoxy) valerate and 2,2-bis-(t-butylperoxy) butane. The transfer agents may be blended directly with a polymer melt, or added as a solution or dispersion in a liquid medium, e.g. chlorinated diphenyl, which enhances the effect of the agent. Examples describe the crosslinking of (1) polyethylene with dicumyl peroxide or 1,3-bis-(t-butylperoxy) isopropylbenzene in the presence of acenaphthylene, with and without chlorinated diphenyl; (2) polyethylene with dicumyl peroxide in the presence of acenaphthylene; and (3) ethylene/propylene rubber with 1,3-bis-(t-butyl peroxy isopropyl benzene in the presence of acenaphthylene, with and without chlorinated diphenyl. The acenaphthylenes are said to function additionally as antioxidants.
