Abstract

129,404. Gaunt, C. F. June 5, 1918. Type-lever machines for embossing metal; machines for printing in curved lines; hammer-impression arrangements; electric driving-mechanism; pedal attachments.-Relates to a machine for indenting inscriptions on the periphery or face of a medal or on the face of a metal label or plate, of the kind in which punches are carried by levers which are operated by key-levers to bring the punches one at a time into contact with the medal &c., the selected punch being then struck by a hammer, and comprises electric means for operating the hammer, and devices of the character described below for supporting and feeding the medal or plate. As shown, punches 9 carried by levers 2 are brought into contact with the medal &c. 1 by depressing keylevers 5, and are then struck by a hammer 40 carried by a lever 41 which may be actuated by a solenoid 63, Fig. 2, which receives a pivoted core 65 on the lever 41. The circuit of the solenoid is closed by a universal bar 90 which is depressed by the key-levers and carries a contact adapted to engage a stationary contact. The hammer is raised by a spring 46. To prevent the hammer from striking the alining-collar 39, described below, when the space-bar is operated, a resilient stop 71 may be provided; or the contact may be carried by a universal bar that is not operated by the space-bar. In some cases, the hammer may be actuated by a pedal or stirrup carried by a cord 45, Fig. 1, or a hand-hammer may be employed for striking the punches. Alining for impression.-The punches 2 are alined by engaging a countersunk hole formed in a collar 37. The collar is mounted in a plate 38 which is adjustably secured to pedestals 17, 25, Fig. 1, or a pedestal 75, Fig. 8. Matrix carriages; matrix-clamping arrangements; letter-spacing mechanism; line-spacing mechanism.-(i) For inscribing the periphery, the medal 1, Fig. 1, is gripped in a rotary carrier consisting of circular jaws 10, 11, the jaw 10 being mounted in the pedestal 17, and the jaw 11 being splined to a sleeve 23 which is mounted in the pedestal 25. The jaw 11 is pressed against the medal by a spring 28 and can be retracted by means of a. knob 30. The medal is supported at the bottom by a roller 13 or an arcuate block. The carrier is rotated for letter-spacing by pawls which engage ratchet-wheels 51, 52 on the parts 10, 23 and are carried by levers 53, 54, connected by links 56, to a yoke 58 on the universal bar 90. The ratchet-wheels engage spring detents. (2) For writing inscriptions in curved lines on the face, the medal &c. is mounted on a rotary table 73, Fig. 8, having a shank 74 which is supported in a pedestal 75. The table is provided with a circular block 72 for supporting the medal and with V-notched clamps 76 which are adjusted by screws 79 and secured by screws 80. The table is rotated for letter-spacing by a pawl 91 which engages a ratchet-wheel 81 on the table and is carried by a lever which is connected by a link 88 and a bell-crank 86 to the yoke 58 on the universal bar. (3) For writing inscriptions in straight lines on the face of a medal, metal label, or the like. the label &c. is mounted on a table 94, Fig. 11. movable laterally for line-spacing on a carriage 95 which is movable longitudinally in the usual manner for letter-spacing. The table slides between guides 96 on the carriage, and is provided with clamps 102 for securing the label &c. 98. The clamps are secured by screws 103 and are formed with recesses shaped to fit the label or medal. The table is provided with a rack 104 engaging a pinion 106 on a shaft 107 which is rotated by a knob 110. A detent engages a ratchet-wheel 113 on the shaft 107. Springs 115 are provided forpreventing lost motion in the gearing 104, 106.
