Abstract

1292812 Crystal separation process IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Jan 1970 [10 Feb 1969] 6986/69 Heading B1G The separation of a crystallisable component from a solution thereof is carried out by a process in which crystals of the said crystalisable component are firstly produced by chilling of the solution (step 1), which crystals are separated from the mother liquor (step 2) and remelted to produce a second solution (step 3), chilling being carried out on this (step 4) to obtain a second crystal slurry, at least some of these crystals being separated from the mother liquor. These crystals are product and removed at 10. The liquor resulting is optionally divided into two streams, one of which is recycled to the second solution at 3, along with some crystals, and the other chilled (step 6) to produce further crystals and a liquor which is recycled to the first solution (at 1). The crystals (separated at 7) may be used for product or are recycled to either 3 or 4. The separators may be either filters or centrifuges, a centrifuge being preferably used at step 5. At steps 5 and 7 the crystals and mother liquor may be washed using, e.g. a C 4 or C 6 paraffin such as pentane, or paraxylene, the mother liquor and the melted crystals (after separation) being distilled to remove the wash liquor. The liquor 9 separated at the first separation may go to an isomerisation plant to be used as further feedstock. An Example is given wherein paraxylene is separated from other xylenes and ethyl benzene.
