Abstract
1292569 Intrauterine washing device BECTON DICKINSON & CO 11 May 1971 [22 June 1970] 14216/71 Heading A5R A device for washing tissue samples from the uterus comprises an inlet tube 27 and an outlet tube 28 in adjacent relationship with the forward end portions thereof adapted to be inserted into an uterus 44, the tubes being open at their rear ends and having a plurality of openings 45, 46 in their forward end portions; adjustable sealing means 29 on the tubes so that when the forward end portions are inserted into the uterus the sealing means can be positioned so as to seal the entrance to the uterus; a connector 30 mounted on the rear end of at least one of the tubes and associated with the rear end of the other tube; means on the connector for mounting a source of washing fluid 25 in communication with the rear end 43 of the inlet tube; and means on the connector for mounting a source of suction 31 in communication with the rear end of the outlet tube, so that when the forward end portions of the tubes are sealed in position in the uterus suction applied to the rear end of the outlet tube will cause a sub-ambient pressure in the uterus and washing fluid will flow from a connected source of washing fluid through the inlet tube and into the uterus, accumulate cells and other matter from the uterus and enter the outlet tube, passing therethrough for collection. By making the openings 45 in the inlet tube smaller and less numerous than the openings 46 in the outlet tube the washing of the uterus may be carried out under sub-ambient pressure conditions and no diseased cells will be forced into cavities such as the fallopion tubes 47. The source of suction may be a common disposable syringe 31 adapted to engage the rear end of the outlet tube. Several alternative embodiments are described and' illustrated in Figs. 9, 11 and 14, not shown.
