Abstract

1292249 Selective printing NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 2 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 40933/71 Heading B6F Recording coded data represented by coloured areas.-A thermal recording head 36 which has a plurality of selectively heatable elements (150, Fig. 5) in the form of bars, and an electromagnetically operated, spring returned hammer mechanism 38, co-operates selectively with two transfer ribbons (76, 78, Fig. 2) on. a carriage 48 to mark a strip of labels 26 with coded data in the form of coloured bars. Strip feeding mechanism.-The strip 26 is advanced label lengths by nip-rollers 32, 34 and is clamped either side of the recording head 36 by electromagnetic clamps 40, 44. A dancer roller 62 controls the unwinding from a reel 28 which is tensioned by a slip clutch. Thermal recording head. (Figs. 5 and 6)-. The head is` supported on an insulating substrate (144), e.g. glass. A deposited layer (146) of resistive material, e.g. tantalum oxide, is etched to produce a pattern illustrated in (Fig. 5). A conductor material, e.g. gold, is deposited on the resistive layer to leave the heating elements (150) exposed. A thin layer of glass (158) is deposited over the whole and affords protection to the heating elements from abrasion. Ribbon mechanism.-Two ribbons, side-byside, are wound from adjacent spools mounted on common spindles 105, 116. Spindle 116 is rotated by a ratchet and pawl mechanism (Fig. 4) driven by an electromagnet 132. One or other of the ribbons is selectively brought into alignment with the head 36 by transversely moving the carriage 71 with a cylindrical cam (82, Fig. 2) mounted on a shaft 84. The cam is rotated one way or the other by a ever 94 and an electromagnet 98.
