Abstract

1292110 Holography CLAUDGEN Ltd 19 May 1971 [21 May 1970] 24643/70 Heading G2J [Also in Division G5] A visual display device, e.g. road sign or advertising sign, for viewing from a predetermined direction with respect to the device comprises at least one hologram 1 comprising a plurality of superposed patterns corresponding respectively to a plurality of different images stored by the hologram, and a plurality of light sources 10, 11 at different fixed positions relative to the hologram, each source corresponding to a different one of said images, whereby when a selected light source, e.g. 10, is lit the corresponding image 12 is reconstructed and that image only is visible from said direction. Where unwanted images 14, 15 are produced these are either blocked off or formed so angularly displaced from the desired images 12, 13 that they are not viewed from said direction. If desired a plurality of such holograms Fig. 4 (not shown) may be arranged side by side and illuminated with a single or a selected set of light sources common to all the holograms, one image being reconstructed from each hologram to set up a message. The light sources are obscured by an opaque member. Multiple holograms are recorded either by changing the angle between one beam and the recording medium together with a change of data mask between exposures; or they may be recorded simultaneously as shown in Fig. 6. In all cases the object beam(s) are reflected from concave mirrors to a focal point, 39, 40 Fig. 6, before impinging on the hologram plate 31. A data mask 42, 41 is incorporated in each beam before the focal point. The reconstruction beam sources (which may be tungsten or mercury are of small size) are located at the positions of the focal points e.g. 39, 40. The viewing direction is then normal to the hologram. The holograms may be transmissive, reflective, volume or "thin", or they may be bleached holograms or formed as variations in surface contours in photo-resist material.
