Abstract

1291816 Boring earth &c BYRON JACKSON Inc 22 Sept 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 45102/70 Heading E1F A spider adapted to rest on a rotary table 1 comprises a slip bowl 3, a set of drill collar slips CS, a set of pipe slips PS, and means 20 for holding each of the slips retracted. The slips PS, CS are respectively carried by linkages 15, 16, and whilst the slips CS are held retracted by latches 20, the linkages 15 are connected by pins 55 to a ring 28 which is moved axially by fluid pressure actuators 40 to move the slips PS to the pipe supporting position shown in Fig. 10. The slips PS may be disconnected from the ring and held retracted by the latches whilst the slips CS are connected to the ring and moved to support a drill collar. A section of the ring and a section of the spider housing 84 together with a pipe slip and its linkage are removable from the spider to permit it to be moved laterally from the pipe string.
